APFA Government Affairs Mission Statement – November 2009

The APFA Government Affairs Program aims to establish a relationship with members of Congress and their staff in order to educate them on the changing role and duties of American Airlines Flight Attendants, and to seek their support on legislative issues that are in the ongoing interests of the APFA membership.

FAA REAUTH UPDATE

Wednesday was a busy day on Capitol Hill.

Our newest advocate for Flight Attendants is Congresswoman Mazie Hirono (D-HI) from the great state of Hawaii. Ms. Hirono spoke before the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee with great knowledge and compassion, urging the committee to pass with unanimous consent two resolutions – OSHA Protections and Flight Attendant Fatigue.

Unfortunately, the committee did not pass either amendment.

Take a look at the roll call vote. It speaks for itself. The votes can be viewed on the Government Affairs page on APFA.org. Ms. Hirono’s remarks on both resolutions are also available for review.

APFA President Laura Glading is sending letters to the committee either thanking them for their support or expressing our disappointment if they voted against the measures.

APFA President Laura Glading said, “I find it incredible, to say the least, that some of our elected officials do not seem to have a concern about the health and safety of the traveling public and crew members on airplanes every day for work, for pleasure and to see loved ones.”

Glading continued, “Thousands of our members e-mailed and called their Senators when the FAA Bill was presented this past September. It’s time to take action again. We need every member – including those that were activists in September – to send a message.”

Please call your Senator today! Or send a letter via our Capwiz page or you may also Take Action via our Facebook page. Tell them we need a safe workplace that will provide basic health and safety protections for our passengers and Flight Attendants.

About the APFA Government Affairs Program …

The 2009 change in Washington leadership and administration signaled that labor unions were to be key players in the effort to restore America’s middle class. In response, President Laura Glading launched APFA’s Government Affairs Program.

On March 17, 2009, a training session was conducted by Joan Wages—APFA’s Washington Representative—for Flight Attendant “Lieutenants,” who were selected from throughout the system for the program. In May, DFW Flight Attendant Julie Frederick took over as coordinator to provide continuity, support the Lieutenants as they contact and meet with members of Congress and capitalize on the current union friendly administration. These meetings are crucial to promoting a deeper understanding of not only how the airline industry has changed—particularly from the perspective of the front line worker—but how the role of Flight Attendants onboard the aircraft has evolved and expanded.

APFA Members can assist by staying informed and getting involved. Whether by email or letter, phone or fax, the voice of the APFA membership is key to achieving results and moving our agenda forward.
