Protest over executive pay at American Airlines

Union employees at American Airlines are making noise over executive pay packages ??? a drumbeat which is likely to resonate more loudly across the airline industry as employees seek to share in the financial turnaround of major US airlines.

In 2006, the industry reported its first profit after five straight years of losses. Strong air passenger traffic is expected to lead to another year in the black in 2007.

American Airlines swung to a first-quarter net income of US$81 million profit in the first quarter compared with a net loss of $92 million a year ago, despite storm-related flight cancellations and rising fuel costs.

Total revenue rose 1.6 percent to $5.43 billion from $5.34 billion a year earlier. Revenue from American Airlines mainline business rose to $4.33 billion while revenue at regional affiliates fell 1.9 percent to $558 million.

In mid-March, winter storms scuttled 2.5 percent of planned departures since the beginning of the year.

Revenue passenger miles fell 1.3 percent to $32.6 billion. The load factor grew to 78.1 percent from 77.2 percent a year ago. Revenue per available seat mile, considered the best basic measure of revenue for airlines, rose by 4.5 percent.

AMR flight attendants in the 19,000-member Association of Professional Flight Attendants union picketed to protest executive pay at 18 US airports on Wednesday, and pilots represented by the Allied Pilots Association this week declined to wear their hats to work. They called it a "hats-off salute" to employees for making their financial sacrifices to keep the airline solvent.
