InfoRep Hotline January 28, 2011

This is Interim InfoRep Steering Committee member Dane Townsend-Pepper with the InfoRep hotline for January 28, 2011.

So, who ya gonna blame now AA?

Over the past week or so all of the major carriers announced their fourth quarter earnings. While everyone else was doing a little jig of glee AA was turning out empty pockets filled with dust (well, except for that little corner that they keep hidden until April when suddenly money appears for executive bonuses). For years AA tried to paint a portrait of poor earnings due to high labor costs. Many of our competitors have similar labor cost and a few of them have the additional burden of merger related costs, yet their performance outshines AAís. Kind of makes one scratch oneís head and ask, ìHow is that possible?î Could it be poor management is to blame for AAís woes and no one else? Might I suggest, AA executives that you dust off your mirrors and take a good hard look at yourselves, put your egos in the backseat and realize there may be no one else to blame for this companies circumstances but yourselves. If you are unable to do that and lead a once great company back to the top of the heap, I hear that fast-food joint with the clown is hiring and Iím sure theyíd be happy to have you join their team since the old clown is checking out retirement homes in Boca.

Check out APFAís two white papers that provide detailed analysis refuting Americanís claim of a labor cost disadvantage at www.www.apfa.org.

Whatís a Flight Attendant got to do to get a release around here?

The glacial pace of molasses in winter continues to be the theme with the National Mediation Board (NMB). The NMB has stated that APFA is in a ìstatus quoî situation. This means that for the time being we are not released and there are no further meetings scheduled. Since ìstatus quoî just doesnít work for us, APFA President Laura Glading is working arduously to meet with the Board of the NMB to move things forward. Of course, AA could easily let the NMB off the hook by offering a contract that is worth real money and recognizes the sacrifices weíve made. Weíll keep you updated on any progress made with the NMB.

More Smoke and Mirrors
[email protected]

Theyíre at it again.†American wants you to believe they put real money on the table during negotiations in Nashville.†In actuality their proposal merely shifted items around and in the end was regressive from previous proposals.†And to top it off, they appeared offended when APFA did not respond.†Who do you think should be offended?

APFA has prepared a response that clears some of the smoke the company blew your way with their latest communication.†The document can be read and downloaded here.†Please print and share with your coworkers.

Welcome Back!

We extend a hearty ìWelcome Backî to the 100 furloughees returning next week. They will report to LGA and MIA. Please join us in welcoming them and making their transition as smooth as possible.

An Unwelcome Farewell

Earlier this month the company announced that it would be closing the DCA-I base effective March 31, 2011 as there will no longer be any direct international flying out of any of the bases co-terminal airports. Although other options were sought the decision was ultimately made to close the base. APFA is in talks with the company on how to best assist the flight attendants affected by the closure and DCA-I flight attendants will receive detailed information as early as this week regarding other base availability.

APFA President Laura Glading states, ìWe know all too well how devastating the closing of a base can be. Regardless of whether or not Flight Attendants physically live in their base city, everyone works very hard and takes extreme pride in their individual domiciles.†A base closing causes both physical and emotional hardship. I am doing everything I can and am working closely with the company for a smooth transition.î

Exploring a new Frontier

Following recent discussions with Flight Service regarding the current status of our reciprocal cabin seat agreements we are very pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with Republic Holdings which will permit reciprocal cabin seat travel on Frontier Airlines flights operated by Republic, Frontier or Chautauqua Airlines.†APFA will continue to push for additional expansion of reciprocal cabin seat agreements.†We are very encouraged by this new agreement and appreciate Flight Serviceís willingness to move†forward on an issue that†we know is important to our members.†This agreement took effect January 25, 2011.†In order to use this agreement you must make a listing by contacting Frontier at 877-302-8804 prior to arriving at the gate.†Information has been added to the Reciprocal Agreement page of the†APFA website.†The Reciprocal Agreement page can be found via the Member Resources link.

Last 5 day MIC

During the last five days of the month, if you are below guarantee after the cancellation/illegality you are under NO obligation to put yourself on the Make Up list.†You may, however put yourself on Make Up if the protection would restore your hours to above guarantee.

Also, when calling APFA Headquarters, please have the name of the crew scheduler/tracker you spoke with.†It can be very valuable.

Tru-Mour

We received lots of interesting rumors and questions after announcing the new ìTru-Mourî section of the IR Hotline. This week we thought weíd address one rumor and a series of questions regarding negotiations.†

Rumor: Iím sure youíre aware that American is moving into a new/refurbished terminal at SFO this spring. AA utilizes 7 gates at our current terminal however I hear that AA will only be occupying 4 gates in the new terminal. Is this true?
Truth: No. AA will have 7 gates in the new terminal as well.

Negotiations Questions: (all negotiations answers have been provided by Chief Negotiator Anne Loew)

Q1: Is it true our new reserve system will be like the pilots with an ìon callî time of 12 hours each reserve day instead of 24 hours?
A1: We will have a meaningful am/pm reserve system. The window will be 15 hours and no less than 50% of unassigned reserves will be awarded an am or pm reserve preference where the reserve list has 16 or more reserves.

Q2: Is it true we will not be getting any type of raise and that we must prepare to pay double for our insurance?
A2: We will NOT agree to any contract that does not provide real structural wage increases. We are insisting on wage increases that offset any increases in medical insurance so that we have REAL money in our pocket.

Q3: Is it true that AA will give all flights 3 hours and less to Eagle and we will become a Transcon and International airline which includes all flight attendants being cross trained on every aircraft?
A3: No, this is not true. AA continues to replace the Super 80ís with 737ís, which can only be flown by AA pilots and flight attendants due to the SCOPE clause. The company has always trained new hire flight attendants on all equipment.

Q4: Is it true that former TWA flight attendants must work for at least 6 months before they retire?
A4: No.

Q5: Will we ever see our vacation and sick time accrual back to the way it was?
A5: Both of our proposals on sick time and vacation include an increase to 2003 levels for full time flight attendants.

Q6: Why is the NMB moving so slowly on releasing us. It is VERY frustrating!
A6: Yes, it is very frustrating. The bottom line is the board members of the NMB are political appointees, they ultimately answer to the President of the United States. Click here to read APFA President Laura Gladings recent Skyword article on Negotiations and the Culture of the NMB.

Weíll answer more of your questions and rumors in this section of the hotline next week so please keep ëem coming!
