Please be advised that APFA has become aware of numerous circumstances where a Flight Attendant has taken possession of an item left on board the aircraft, or in a terminal, with the sole intention of contacting the passenger and returning it. The item either contained a return address, or the agent provided the passengerís contact information to the Flight Attendant.
Unfortunately the company has decided the best way to reward Flight Attendants who strive to go the extra mile and ensure that a passengerís lost item is returned, is to put them through torturous security interviews which ultimately end with their employment being terminated for theft. In the most recent insult to our professionalism the Flight Attendant was arrested and incarcerated.
In order to protect yourself from the company questioning your good intentions and your integrity please do not play the Good Samaritan. If you see something left behind on the aircraft, do not touch it. Rather, you should notify the Agent of the item and its location. Under no circumstances should you take on the responsibility of attempting to reunite passengers with their belongings.
The company has made its position clear. If they become aware of your attempt to reunite any item with a passenger, they will most likely seek your termination. You could be arrested and possibly incarcerated, facing criminal charges and substantial legal costs.
Being a Good Samaritan under these circumstances can have a bad ending.
