GOLDEN WINGS CHANGES WHO CAN QUALIFY FOR THEIR SUPPLEMENTAL MEDICAL
Golden Wings, which is an independent company that sells supplemental (back-up) medical insurance to retired airline employees, has announced they will no longer write coverage for retirees not receiving Medicare. Apparently the new healthcare rules would require them to provide unlimited coverage, and the premiums would be very high. By limiting the coverage to retirees that also have Medicare, the premiums can be smaller.
FOR RETIREES WITH GOLDING WINGS AND MEDICARE:
Your Golden Wings coverage will not be changing, and you have a “premium holiday” (no charge) for the coming year. New pricing will be coming out in September or October of next year for the following year.
FOR RETIREES WITH GOLDING WINGS AND NO MEDICARE:
Your Golden Wings coverage ended in September of 2011. You may “re-enroll” for the supplemental medical insurance within 30 days of your 65 Birthday, or of qualifying for Medicare. If you also had the Golden Wings Dental Rider (Dental Insurance) you will be allowed to keep that coverage for the cost of that rider only.
FOR FUTURE RETIREES:
If you will be retiring before you are eligible for Medicare, you will not be able to sign up for Golden Wings supplemental insurance. You may enroll for that supplemental medical insurance within 30 days of your 65 Birthday, or of qualifying for Medicare. You will have your AA Retiree Standard Medical Plan if you have been prefunding. You will also be offered the opportunity to sign up for AA Supplemental Insurance (backup plan) but AA has announced they will be discontinuing their supplemental medical plan at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014. If you are concerned that your RSMP coverage may be insufficient, and want a back-up plan before age 65, you can check with several insurance providers, including AARP. Make sure you are clear that you are looking for a “back-up” plan in case you exhaust your primary medical plan. “Supplemental Medical” is the term many providers use to describe their “Medi-gap Plans.” If you do find a good plan, please let APFA know about it at [email protected].
