FACT or fiction?
Q: When will LAA have the pay protections under the JCBA implemented?

A:  Pay Protection is one of the items to be implemented under the direction of the Joint Scheduling Implementation Committee (JSIC).  This is a high priority item but, due to the programming necessary, an estimate is not available yet.   Should any Flight Attendant experience a Misconnect, Illegality, or Cancellation due to the extreme weather in the northeast please follow our current MIC guidelines for pay protection found under scheduling at www.www.apfa.org.

Q: With the weather delays we are experiencing can you explain how the voluntary duty day waiver works?

A: At the Flight Attendant’s option and when offered by crew tracking/crew scheduling,  the Duty-Day Operational max can be extended.  Once the duty day maximum is waived it cannot be “unwaived.”   The same holds true for the pay, once the crew has agreed to extend their duty day max the entire duty day will be paid the additional one minute for every 2 minutes on duty over the sequence pay for the entire duty period whether the maximum is exceeded or not.

Looking at the 3 day LAA Domestic sequence below, day 3 experienced a “creeping” delay.  Due to “e” time for the scheduled and rescheduled day the crew had 5.04 minutes of pay and credit added to their scheduled flight time of 3.22 for a total of 8.26 pay for the day.  Since the crew waived their duty day max to work back to base, an additional 8.26 was paid but not credited for the entire duty day of 16.53 (16.53 divided by 2 equals 8.26).  Full pay for the 3 day sequence was 29.23 including the pay for the voluntary waiver.

For International flights the Voluntary Duty Waiver applies to all duty periods scheduled with 12 hours or less flying time and a scheduled duty day max of 14 hours.  If the flight in this duty period is delayed, projecting the crew to exceed their 16 hour duty day max, Crew Schedule may offer the crew the option to “waive” their max duty day. If the crew agrees, Flight Attendants will receive pay for the duty period at 200%, including premiums.

In the example below, the LAX to NRT crew was originally scheduled to be on duty for 13.30 hours with scheduled flying time of 12 hours.  The first day of the sequence, the flight was delayed projecting their duty day over 16 hours.  The crew volunteered to waive the duty day max of 16 hours and received 200% pay for the duty period marked with a “VE”. In other words, each Flight Attendant was paid 12 hours of scheduled or actual flying time, whichever is greater, plus another 12 hours at each Flight Attendant’s applicable hourly rate. For a Flight Attendant at the top of the pay scale with a pay rate of $58.58/hr, pay for that one duty period would be 12 hours x $117.16/hr.  If the duty period included any duty rig, it would also be paid at 200%

Q: The snowstorm has delayed us in LHR.  Has the International Premium Destination (IPD) been implemented? How many hours will be paid for a 24 hour delay?

A:  Flights delayed in Asia, Europe, and Deep South America for more than 10 hours will be paid an additional 5 hours of pay and credit including all premiums over the value of the sequence.  If the trip is delayed for more than 24 hours then an additional 5 hours of pay and credit will be paid over the value of the sequence.  A delay greater than 24 hours would be paid an additional 10 hours including all premiums over the value of the sequence and applicable duty rigs.  An additional 5 hours will be added for subsequent 24 hour delays.
10 hour + 1 minute delay receives 5 hours pay and credit over sequence value
24 hour + 1 minute delay receives 10 hours pay and credit over sequence value
48 hour + 1 minute delay receives 15 hours pay and credit over sequence value
