FACT: American Airlines is expected to announce second quarter profits of well over $1 billion on Thursday, July 24th. Last quarter’s profits of $480 million were the highest 1Q profits in American’s history. When the merger was approved on December 9, 2013, American issued a press release stating “it was expected to generate $1 billion in annual net synergies by 2015” and it appears we are well ahead of that target. It is important to note that by including profit sharing as a part of our Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) it will ensure Flight Attendants share in the continued success of this merger.

FACT: Negotiations continued this week in DFW with current discussions continuing to focus on the economic items of Scheduling and Scheduling related items. Approximately 58 days with 27 face-to-face meetings remain in the 150 days of negotiating as agreed to in the Negotiations Protocol Agreement.

FACT: Many Flight Attendants may have heard that pre-merger AA Flight Attendants would begin closing aircraft doors due to language in the pre-merger CWA-represented US Airways agents’ CBA. Upon further investigation, it appears there isn’t clear contractual language regarding door closing procedures. APFA and American Airlines are now discussing proposed changes by American to our flight door closing procedures and we will update as discussions continue.

FACT: Implementation of Preferential Bidding on the US Airways side has been delayed until February 2015. This decision was made upon discovering several items that need more work throughout the “mock bidding” process as well as providing more training to pre-merger US Airways Flight Attendants. Preferential Bidding is not expected to begin for pre-merger AA Flight Attendants for at least another year.

FACT or Fiction:
Q: Is it true that new hires will only have 40 days added to their date of hire even though our training was eight weeks long?

A: Not true.  Flight Attendants hired after January 1, 2013 will get their actual start date of training. Only those Flight Attendants hired prior to 2013 will see the 40 days added to their OCC date. The December 20, 2013, APFA Hotline states: “AFA and APFA finalized a Seniority Protocol Agreement, which is a separate document from our agreement on Bargaining and Representation. Flight Attendants will retain length of service as Flight Attendants with their respective carrier, utilizing the Occupational Seniority Date at American and the Seniority Integration Date (SID) (commonly referred to as “Date of Hire”) at US Airways. There will be an adjustment of 40 days for American Flight Attendants on the seniority list prior to January 1, 2013, to reflect time spent in initial Flight Attendant training. Actual training start dates will be utilized for Flight Attendants hired at American in 2013 and later.”

The next phase of the FACT program is beginning this week as Regional Fact Representatives will be trained in DFW. Greater Flight Attendant involvement on the base and national level will be happening soon as we begin working with Flight Attendants from the US Airways side. Our goal for this program is to provide more local involvement and local activities as we educate the membership on our process to a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA).
