November Training Bid Update
Due to the upcoming Daylight Savings Time change on November 1st at 02:00am, the training classes for some Flight Attendants were displayed on the wrong date in the Training Bidding System (TBS). The software has been updated and the classes are now displayed correctly. If you submitted a training bid prior to 8:00pm ET on October 2, please review it again to ensure that your desired classes are on the correct date.
Training Pay & Make-up
Flight Attendants are paid a daily rate for training of $75 and any necessary training removals will be unpaid and uncredited for Lineholders.
Q: How do I recover the time when a removal is required?
A: Flight Attendants may recover the time through Make-up, Option II and Critical Coverage or by picking up time from fellow Flight Attendants. Recognizing the loss as involuntary, APFA and AA have agreed to offer two additional options for these low on time Flight Attendants.
S/he may call Crew Schedule one time during the month to request:
- Pre-plot open time trip(s) equal to the value of the removed sequence plus up to one hour up to two days prior to the trip origination, or
- HVBL days, which permit recovery of the value of the removed sequence plus up to one hour. Normal HVBL rules apply and allow access to open time in day before coverage during the self-plot window from 0500-1200 Home Base Time (HBT).
The Senior-on-Duty at Crew Schedule must assist with these options. They can help between the hours of 0700 and 2100 Central. To reach the Senior-on-Duty, call 800-VIP-CREW and follow the prompts to reach Crew Schedule for “today’s operation”. When a Scheduler answers, tell them you’re calling about a training removal and open time access and ask for the Senior-on-Duty.
A Flight Attendant schedules training for 7-8May and is removed from 2 turnaround trip sequences worth a combined 12:00 (6:30 + 5:30). The Flight Attendant may call Crew Schedule one time to pick up a trip(s) during the month worth up to 13:00 (6:30 + 5:30 + 1:00) or he/she may request 2 HVBL days be added to his/her schedule during the same month as the unpaid trip removals.
Q: What if I have an illegality after I attend training?
Please note: Both duty-day and at base rest legalities are computed based on the flights scheduled in the classroom roster (CRR) from/to your base. Voluntary deviation (due to commuting, traveling out of a co-terminal city, etc.) from these flights does not cause a new legality calculation.
How are Reserve assignments made?
There are actually two contractually permissible ways to assign Reserves.
Per Article 10.H, assignments during the month should be made in time accrued order. The lowest time Reserve receives the highest time trip.
Duration is an exception and an override to the system (Article 10.K.6) that should be justified when used. Duration means that instead of assigning lowest time Reserve to highest time trip, the assignment program called Time Accrued Reserve System (TARS) also takes into account how many days the reserve is available to fly. It then matches the Reserve’s days of availability with sequences of the same length and assigns lowest time reserve with highest time matching trip.
The best way to be prepared for possible assignments is to monitor both your relative position in the time accrued system and also in your days available grouping. Remember, the HI25 is a guideline and doesn’t indicate who ahead of may be legal for the same assignments.
Looking forward, the JCBA includes some exciting improvements to the transparency of assignments and the method of bidding for assignments. Watch for updates from the JISC regarding the implementation timeline.
Over Water Training
Classes will be offered in November and December, with Make-up classes in January. If you have not attended training, please check your AA email for more details.
