Random Drug and Alcohol Testing – LAA/LUS
The APFA EAP Department is often asked if random drug and alcohol testing is truly random. As Flight Attendants, we are subject to unannounced random drug and alcohol testing. Alcohol testing is administered just prior to, during or just after performing safety-sensitive functions. The federally mandated alcohol testing rate for Flight Attendants is 10% of our workgroup and 25% of the workgroup for drug testing.
No manager, supervisor, official or agent may select you for testing just because they want to. Under DOT regulations, employers must use a truly random selection process. Each employee must have an equal chance to be selected and tested. The names of the selected Flight Attendants are generated at the beginning of each month.
Just prior to the testing event, you will be notified of your selection and provided enough time to stop performing your safety-sensitive function and report to the testing location. Failure to show for a test or interfering with the testing process can be considered a refusal to test.
The FAA visits the Company property every six months to review drug and alcohol testing procedures and ensure the Company is in compliance with the Federally mandated regulations. Please call the APFA EAP department at 817-540-0108, ext. 8701 for answers to your drug and alcohol testing concerns.
