As we prepare for Valentines Day picketing events, I can’t help but think back to my days as a new hire just prior to APFA’s strike in 1993 and how much things have changed. Back then we had beepers instead of cell phones and social media consisted of online chat rooms accessible only through dial up connections. The best way to become informed was to attend local base meetings and engage your colleagues in conversation in airplane galleys and on jumpseats.

Somewhere along the way, we have lost this very basic but effective way of staying connected. For all the tweeting and posting we do on social media, I sometimes feel that we have become less cohesive in terms of interpersonal interaction and common purpose as it relates to unionism.

We spend hours behind tiny screens and keyboards sharing our perspectives and venting in cyber space, but how often do we actually initiate face to face discussions with our colleagues about the issues we face as a union?

The two biggest threats to unionism are apathy and division. Fact Reps have a unique opportunity within APFA to engage and unify by interacting directly with the membership on a personal level right where they work–on the front line, on airplanes and in airports doing what we do. There is no substitute for this kind of networking to build cohesiveness and restore a sense of solidarity and trust in our union.

It is my hope that the Fact Rep pin on your lapel inspires you to go beyond disseminating facts. Don’t wait for questions. Start conversations on airplanes about the issues we currently face and encourage members to stay engaged and involved. Remind them that they are APFA and without their help and a commitment to unity, leadership is powerless.

We have spent the better part of a decade navigating attempts by management to erode the basic tenets of unionism under the guise of working together instead of promoting and flexing our one true strength– our numbers.

As you discuss details of the upcoming picketing events with our colleagues, please consider incorporating a bit of old school networking into the mix. Hand out union pins and re-engage the membership by encouraging union chatter. We don’t always have to agree, but at the end of the day we all share the common purpose of presenting a unified voice to management.

Thank you for your service to the membership and please feel free to reach out to leadership and your National Chairs with questions or concerns.
