A MESSAGE FROM YOUR APFA LGA BASE COUNCIL
Although I understood the responsibilities before me, I did not expect the whirlwind of challenges upon commencing our term. The loss of too many of our NYC colleagues, repeated instances of flight attendants being physically assaulted, and the many challenges presented by two variants of the COVID pandemic. Even with the unimaginable happening to us while we come to work, NYC flight attendants remain the strongest and most resilient in the industry.
Labor has always had to fight for what we earn and deserve. That is our reality and one written in our history. Though 2021 was yet another challenging year and only added to the previous year’s challenges, we take comfort and appreciate the much-needed growth that the industry’s slow recovery allows New York to have finally. Although most of us who have been based here for a while felt as if we were forgotten, we can hope for growth today. We have started to welcome new hire flight attendants, destinations to parts of the world we couldn’t imagine just months ago, and the importance of our city finally recognized on the route map. Although we have many challenges ahead of us, such as staffing levels, functioning scheduling systems, recognition in line with our hard work, and crucial much-needed legislation from congress to protect flight crews, we face a bright horizon for 2022.
Penelope and I remain focused, committed, and determined to resolve issues plaguing our work lives. It truly is an honor to represent each of you, and we wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Holiday Season!
