8.20.23 – APFA PHL Base Brief – August 20, 2023

Sunday, August 20, 2023

Hello PHL,

In this hotline:

  • Meeting with base management
  • Need help casting your strike authorization vote? Voting closes August 29th!
  • Make a plan to join a picket on August 30th!
  • I am on probation. Am I allowed to vote?

Friday, we met with Managing Director of Base Operations Frank Morales, and Senior Base Manager Naomi Van Winkle. We had an in-depth conversation about the issues facing our PHL FAs.

These are some the issues covered:

Hotels, Catering, Complaint Letters, Early Boarding, Drug Testing and Uniform Compliance.

Nothing was immediately resolved, however we were given reassurances that our concerns will be generating important discussions with the Management Group. Only time will tell if we see any changes and or improvements.

Your PHL APFA Leadership made it clear; management is focusing on metrics and losing sight of the human element.

We spent a lot of time discussing how customer complaint letters are handled in an arbitrary and capricious manner by Inflight. We stressed that we expect the process of how Inflight reviews passenger complaint letters before they decide on whether the letters rise to the level of a mandatory meeting with the FA.

We made it very clear that in today’s world, the customer wants the ability to control their travel experience using technology. As we have all experienced, we get processed into phone trees, use online apps and websites, instead of speaking to a person. Our passengers experience the same frustration.

Our FAs are becoming the only human our passengers come into contact with. Keeping in mind FAs have the most extensive passenger contact than any other work group. That translates into our passengers directing all their frustration (cxld flights, lack of catering, impossible connect times, delays, payment issues, baggage issues, seat issues, lack of amenity issues, etc.) at our FAs. It is no wonder that passenger disruption and abuse of our FAs has increased.

Management’s expectation, or pure ignorance of this fact, has to stop. We can not be made accountable for their entire travel experience when the company insists on cutting corners and resources. We will not allow the Company to use our FA’s as a catch-all for all customer travel hiccups.
