9.05.23 – APFA PHX Base Brief – October 2023 Staffing and Allocations

Tuesday, September 5, 2023

Congratulations AA Flight Attendants!

The results are in and your PHX Base Leadership and Contract Action Team couldn’t be more ecstatic. 93% our our eligible Flight Attendants participated in the strike authorization voting process. 99.47% voted YES to give APFA the green light to call for a strike if mediated negotiations break down at the table and after a 30-day cooling-off period.

Thank you, PHX FA’s

We’d like to send a big thank you to the overwhelming number of eligible PHX FA’s that participated in the strike vote. When push comes to shove, we know PHX FA’s will show up when needed.

Also, thank you to Alana Billingsley and Mindy Julien, as well as all the volunteers, for your incredible work in reaching out to the Flight Attendants at the PHX airport, handing out our WAR pins, and helping Flight Attendants vote by resetting their passwords.

A huge thank you to Alana Billingsley for securing the IAM Union Hall for our Rally on August 30th. The work that Alana did was above and beyond. A special thank you to Gidget Clayton for her work on social media, and Mindy Julien for her work at the airport and on the phones, and for baking cookies and cupcakes for the Rally. To those who volunteered at the front desk, signing in to our Flight Attendants, you rock!

The day would not have been complete without Bill Lehman, Joe Seelye, and Gene Labat speaking to the members. They reminded us where we started and how far we have come when we stand united!!

October 2023 Staffing and Allocations

On Sunday, September 3, 2023, APFA Base Representatives had the monthly staffing and allocations call with the Company. PHX has the highest percentage of Reserves, with CLT close behind at 24.2%, DFW at 19.6%, and LAX slightly behind at 18.0%. We continue to push for more Flight Attendants in PHX, especially new hires. Rotating Reserve will only work in PHX and LAX once our vacancy lists are cleared and new hires are allowed into our bases. Rotating Reserve was built to work optimally with a flow of new hires into each base. The stagnancy in PHX and LAX will continue to add to the need for a higher Reserve count at the beginning and end of each month, which covers the transition from Reserve to Lineholder. In turn, this skews the Reserve numbers needed in the base.

As for CLT and PHX having the highest Reserve numbers, it is based on several factors. In PHX, a lot is our Reserve absenteeism, the number of out-of-base sequences that break in PHX, and the ability to cover broken sequences by CLT on the east coast and PHX on the west coast. We have been told that until we get the numbers down, we will continue to see high Reserve numbers. We fought to get lower reserve numbers in August and September, basing our request on more Lineholders would lower line averages and reduce the number of sequences in open time. Unfortunately, even though our line averages were lower, our absenteeism remained high and, in some cases, higher than in previous months.

As for allocations, our flight hours will see another decrease. In September, we will have 68,410 flight hours, and in October, we will have 64,415. This is a decrease of 3,995 flight hours. The percentage of 1-days will decrease by 4% to 24%, 2-days will increase by 6% to 39% of our flying, with a 1% decrease in 3 days to 34 %, and our 4-day sequences will decrease by 1% to 3% with the majority commutable.

ODANs will increase from 13.73 to 22.67 starts. The ODANs will include SNA, SMF, RNO, FAT, TUS, LAX, LAS, ABQ, and ONT.  LAX , LAS and TUS ODANs will have a ground time of over 9 hours.

There are no significant changes in our sequences for October. The LHR overnight will increase to 22 hours toward the end of OCT.
