American Airlines FMLA Policy Change

After discussing the recent changes to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy with our members in New York, I have decided to file a Base Notice of Dispute (NOD) to address the impact this policy change has had and will continue to have on all of us at the base.

Members have reported that prior to the policy change and currently, doctors often find the airline’s strict FMLA certification process daunting, leading some to refuse to provide the service all together. Those doctors who do still offer this service have added a cost to it and continued to increase the costs for members applying for FMLA due to health issues.

Beginning February 1, 2025, the new policy imposes a financial burden on Flight Attendants in New York. Those with medical conditions requiring intermittent leave may now have to skip workdays and incur additional expenses, including co-pays for doctor visits and fees for FMLA documentation, twice instead of once. Often, using FMLA is not a choice but a necessity to protect our careers from American’s strict attendance policy.

It is essential for all New York Flight Attendants to communicate with their Crew Managers regarding how this policy change affects them. We encourage you to share specific experiences by sending your statements to [email protected]. With your permission, we will use your feedback in the dispute process to advocate effectively for a resolution that addresses both management’s needs and the impact this change has on Flight Attendants in New York.
