2.12.26 – Reminders: Intermittent FMLA and Calling in Well

Calling In Well (CIW) For Intermittent FMLA

Thursday, February 12, 2026

Calling in Well (CIW) for intermittent FMLA allows you to fly over the footprint of a trip for which you have called in sick.

Eligibility for Calling in Well for Intermittent FMLA

  • You must have an approved intermittent FMLA leave on file with the Absence and Return Center (ARC).
  • You must have FMLA days available. As a reminder, a Flight Attendant may use up to 72 FMLA days per year.
  • You must be available to work beginning within the footprint of the absence.
  • Lineholders should use TTS/UBL, and Reserves should use ROTA/D, to pick up a trip.
  • You may call in well for day(s) other than the first day of the trip. For example, if you call in sick for a 3-day trip February 24-26, you may Call in Well for the 25th and 26th, or just the 26th. The trip you are picking up should start within the footprint of the absence but may extend beyond the footprint (e.g. a 3-day trip beginning on the 25th or the 26th).
  • Certain sequences are not eligible for Calling in Well (e.g. 1-day sequences, ODANs, certain sequences with Red Eye duty period(s), etc.).
  • The first day, and/or other days not recoded, will remain an intermittent FMLA absence.
  • If you do not make yourself available to work on the days you have called in well, the absence may revert to FMLA.

How do I let the company know I am calling in well?

  • The process for Calling in Well for intermittent FMLA is accomplished by submitting a form in Comply365. As a reminder, CIW is no longer done by phone or email.
  • Follow this path: Comply365 > My Forms > Category: AAFA Inflight Admin Requests > Calling In Well: Intermittent FMLA Recode Request.
  • The form must be submitted between 0001 and 1430 Home Base Time (HBT) the day prior to when you want to work. Using the above example, if you want to call in well for the 25th and 26th, you should submit the CIW form between 0001 and 1430 HBT on the 24th.
  • The company will process eligible CIW requests for the following day by 1500 HBT.

How is CIW for Intermittent FMLA different than CIW as provided for in CBA 9.D.1.c and 9.D.2.d?

  • Calling in Well for Intermittent FMLA is not subject to Crew Scheduling consent if eligibility requirements are met.
  • Calling in Well for other sick absences is subject to Crew Scheduling consent. When CIW is open for all sick calls, the company generally communicates it via a banner on Crew Portal.
