5.25.26 – Memorial Day 2026: Remember and Honor

Monday, May 25, 2026

Memorial Day is a solemn American observance dedicated to honoring members of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. Observed each year on the last Monday of May, it is a day of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

Across the country, Americans commemorate Memorial Day in many ways — visiting cemeteries and memorials, placing flags at gravesites, attending ceremonies and parades, and gathering with family and friends to reflect on the meaning of service and sacrifice. While the holiday also marks the unofficial beginning of summer, its true purpose remains rooted in remembrance.

The origins of Memorial Day trace back to the aftermath of the Civil War, a conflict that claimed more American lives than any other war in the nation’s history. Communities across the country began holding tributes to fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags, leading to the original name, “Decoration Day.” One of the earliest recorded commemorations took place on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, where formerly enslaved people and members of the United States Colored Troops gathered to honor Union soldiers who had died fighting for freedom and unity.

As America faced new conflicts throughout the 20th century, the observance expanded beyond the Civil War to recognize all American service members who died in military service. Following World War I, the holiday became widely known as Memorial Day, honoring the fallen from every branch of the military and every era of conflict.

In 2000, Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance, encouraging Americans to pause at 3:00 p.m. local time each Memorial Day for a moment of silence in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, we pause to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. Their courage, sacrifice, and selfless dedication will never be forgotten.

As we reflect this Memorial Day, may we carry forward their legacy with gratitude and honor the freedoms they gave everything to protect.
