4.03.25 – APFA ORD Base Brief – May 2025 Staffing and Allocations

May 2025 ORD Staffing and Allocations
Thursday, April 3, 2025
Happy April, Chicago!
April showers are here. The storms over the last few days have shown that. Please continue to take advantage of APFA.org for questions and information, especially during IROPS, the “on the job” section of APFA can help give guidance on many of the issues we experience during IROPS.
Summer flying is here, and that comes with plenty of challenges. Be sure to save the K19 FYI phone number in your phone 773-686-2615. If there are any issues with your trips, reach out to the company for assistance at Daily Ops: 682-315-7070/888-222-4737
Important Dates
- Cinco de Mayo – May 5
- Mother’s Day – May 11
- Memorial Day – May 26
Reserve Bidding Basics
On April 18th, ORD will host a virtual class geared towards Reserve Bidding Basics. While we understand this is short notice, we will record the class and post it ASAP. That link will be sent soon after filming.
There will be a link to watch the class, and times will be sent closer to the class date. Stay tuned!
A few months ago, ORD hosted a PBS Bidding Basics Class. Over time, we will host more training. We know that is something our base appreciates, expects, and deserves.
Allocations
ODANS are similar to last month but are down over recent months. We will watch how these trips are flown and advocate for more.
We know “pink eye” trips are desirable and sought after; we will continue to advocate for more of these trips – as they are frequently covered and rarely in open time.
Staffing
The new hires continue to come to Chicago. 80 new hires are included in our Reserve count for May.
ORD has a reserve percentage of 19.2% vs the system average of 20.0%.
In May 2025, Chicago had a headcount of 2,794, compared to May 2024, which had 2,599.
Sequence Starts per Day
Trip Construction
- 1-day: 27% in May vs 27% in April
- 2-day: 21% in May vs 23% in April
- 3-day: 50% in May vs 47% in April
- 4-day: 3% in May vs 3% in April
- ODAN Starts per day: 12.3 in May vs 12.3 in April
These numbers seem higher than we would like. But 2-day trips that barely pass midnight will show as 3-day sequences in the sequence distribution shown above.
Same for turns, which show as 27%, but a turn with a release after midnight will not show as a 1-day sequence in the chart above.
18% of our 3-day sequences are IPD trips.
