5.08.25 – APFA LAX Base Brief – June 2025 Staffing and Allocations

June 2025 LAX Staffing and Allocations

Thursday, May 8, 2025

No Voluntary Leaves of Absence (VLOAs)
are being offered at any base for June 2025.

LAX needs increased headcount without increased Reserve percentages.

In PHX, the processing of vacancy transfers into the base and the placement of new hires at the base has not lowered Reserve seniority.

The answer is not to add headcount while raising reserve percentages to stratospheric levels.

Year-over-year (June 2025 vs. June 2024):

  • LAX base headcount has decreased from 1736 to 1664.
  • Inactive Flight Attendants has dropped from 143 to 111.
  • Reserve numbers have decreased from 328 to 318.
  • Reserve percentage has increased from 20.6% to 20.7%.
  • System Reserve percentage average has increased from 22.7% to 23.0%.
  • System line average has decreased from 82.2 to 82.0.

June 2025 Allocations

Systemwide, the Company is reducing block hours by 12,000 year over year when comparing June 2025 to June 2024.

During the Allocations call, the Company denied that it is suspending new- hire training.

  • LAX Total Block Hours: 96,404
  • IPD/NIPD Widebody Hours: 34,016
  • Domestic Widebody Hours: 4,196
  • IPD/NIPD Narrowbody Hours: 15,679
  • Domestic Narrowbody Hours: 42,513

Satellite and Co-Terminal Block Hours

  • ONT: 3,917
  • SNA: 5,888
  • LAS: 1,680
  • SAN: 1,105

  • 3-day trips are still excessive at 31%. The LAX Allocations Group continues to push for fewer 3-days. If a greater portion of the time allocated to 3-days were to be reallocated to more 2-days, AA would see greater reliability; Open Time and ETB would not be clogged with 3-days; and commuters would not be looking at 4-5 day commitment when the 3-days are not commutable.
  • There are 3 daily 777 DFW turns, as well as daily, or near-daily, high time turns to ORD, CMH, CUN and MEX. In addition , high time turns at a lower frequency to JFK, DCA, PIT, PHL, RDU, ATL, MIA and BNA will be flown by LAX crews in JUNE 2025.
  • Transcons: LAX will be flying the 0819 (AA 307) departure to JFK as a turn. Other LAX-JFK sequences for the month include flight 32; 274; 4 and 10. The Allocations Group has requested more LAX-BOS, as well.
  • KOA turn replaces the KOA layover. There is an OGG turn and an OGG layover. The Allocations Group has requested the KOA layover back.

2nd Quarter 2025 Inflight Web-Based Training

This quarterly training must be completed by Monday, June 2 at 23:59 (CT)

California Sick Reminders

  • If you have 40:00 or more in your sick bank on January 1st, 40:00 of that sick bank will be designated as your California Sick Bank.
  • If you have less than 40:00 in your sick bank on January 1st, the company will advance enough hours to bring your bank up to 40:00. The 40:00 total is your California Sick Bank.
  • When the company advances the number of hours required to bring your bank up to 40:00 on January 1st, you will pay the amount advanced at a rate of 4:30 each month until fully repaid. This is deducted from your monthly sick time accrual of 4:30 per month.
  • You can check your sick time usage via the HISK entry in DECS. Scroll to the bottom, and you will see a Monthly Usage table. This table shows your monthly usage and monthly sick time total.
  • The first 40.00 hours of sick time used from January 1st on are automatically recoded to California Sick.
  • You can easily keep track of your California Sick usage via the HISK. The first 40 hours of usage each year is covered by the California Sick Bank.
  • Do not apply for FMLA, or request recode to an existing Intermittent Family Leave, for a sick call as long as there are hours in your California Sick Bank. Under laws enacted in 2015, a California employer is permitted to burn California Sick time even if the employee applies for a recoding to FMLA for the same absence in error.

California Paid Family Leave (PFL)

California Paid Family Leave (PFL) provides up to 8 weeks of benefits, funded through the California State Disability system, to employees  who need to take time off work to:

  • Bond with a new child,
  • Care for a seriously ill family member, or
  • Support a family member’s military deployment.

CA PFL Information

The first step in the PFL application process is to determine your eligibility:

To qualify for PFL benefits, you must:

  • Be unable to do your regular work.
  • Have lost wages because you need to:
    • Bond with a new child.
    • Care for a seriously ill family member.
    • Support a family member in the US armed forces who is deploying to a foreign country.
  • Be employed or actively looking for work when your family leave starts.
  • Have earned at least $300 and paid into State Disability Insurance (SDI) in the last 18 months. You will see this as “CASDI” on your paystub.
  • Submit any required documents.

Contact your Attendance Manager to discuss your intention to apply for PFL, then visit the State Disability Website to apply.

Once approved, you will receive a weekly benefit amount through the State Disability System.

LAX-BNE
AA has announced LAX-BNE service between December 5, 2025 and January 31, 2026. The service will operate 3 times a week.

Upon hearing the announcement, I contacted AA management in Allocations and Flight Service requesting that the LAX Flight Attendant base fly this trip. I pointed out and emphasized that the trip can be flown most economically out of LAX.

The seasonal LAX-AKL has already been loaded into SABRE, and is searchable through Google.

2024 CBA Contract Book

If you do not already have a 2024 CBA Contract Book, you are now able to pick one up from any base.

Two more boxes of contract books are due to arrive at LAX Flight Service in the next day or two. I am awaiting delivery confirmation.

In NY, the contracts will be available at both JFK and LGA. At DFW, they will be available for pick up from the Terminal C Service Center.
