7.03.25 – APFA MIA Base Brief – August 2025 Staffing and Allocations

August 2025 MIA Staffing and Allocations

Thursday, July 3, 2025

Hello Miami,

The summer storms have arrived with a vengeance. They come with the customary delays, cancelations, and reschedules. Remember that with large operational disruptions and IROPs there are long wait times for calls into scheduling/tracking/hotel limo desks. Adjustments and repairs to live sequences can take much longer than normal.  Pay protection adjustments may take several days, or possibly until close-out (by the 10th of the next month) to appear on your schedule. Pack lots of patience!

We are starting a new topic in the brief each month called, “Month in Review, Your Base Reps at Work.” It will track the work that we do for you here in Miami. It is below.

Month in Review – Your MIA Base Reps at Work

Check Rides

When it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck. With the new Inflight “reengineering” as they call it, we have been notified that check rides will be conducted more often.

The new team of managers will focus on “service analysis, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and enhancing the overall customer experience.”

Continue to be the safety and service professionals you are.

New Inflight Department

Speaking of the new Inflight department, you now know that you have three (3) managers. You can find your managers’ information on Crew Portal by clicking on your name at the top.

Inflight was noticed by APFA and has agreed that management is obligated to assist our Flight Attendants. Please utilize Company resources when you have questions or issues that can be resolved by them.

One of our best resources 24/7 is Inflight Ops Support at 682-315-7070. If they cannot answer your issue, they will direct you to the proper contact. The number for the MIA Service Center is 786-591-2900.

There are now more managers in the terminal and meeting flights. This is a good reminder to have everything in order when reporting for duty — tablet, uniform, procedures.

Reserve Not in Position/Out of Base

We have seen a recent increase in investigations regarding reserves not in position to accept an assignment while on a Reserve Availability Period (RAP). The Company is aggressively enforcing the requirements of JCBA Section 12.H.1. You must be able to report to the airport within three (3) hours for a MIA/FLL/PBI trip while serving a RAP based in Miami.

If you are on reserve and you have a triggering event such as a TM (no contact, trip missed), MT (missed trip), LC (late call out or sick on contact), or a late request of a PO, the Company will conduct a travel audit and compare it to your reserve schedule. They will conduct a 35R investigation. During this investigation, they will pull your travel history, including past, current AA listings, and other airlines. They will use other evidence to substantiate their claim that a Flight Attendant was not in position to report within the contractual timeline while receiving guarantee pay when they are not available for work.

Currently there are numerous investigations ongoing across the system regarding this topic. Most of these investigations have resulted in termination, even after just one incident regardless of employment duration or exigent circumstances. Since January, we have had nine (9) terminations in Miami alone due to the Company determining the Flight Attendant was not in position to report to the airport within three (3) hours while on their RAP.

APFA strongly disagrees with the Company’s position and decision to terminate Flight Attendants in these situations. Termination is extreme, and we have and will challenge each of these terminations.

Parking

We are in discussions with management regarding the lack of employee parking situation. We are still waiting for updated information about our employee parking garage that was announced last year. In the meantime, we are looking for a solution to the lack of parking spaces and flooding in our current lot.

CCI at FLL

KCM at FLL is in front of Terminal F. Our terminal is Terminal E so CCI trip sign-in does not work until you are closer to our gates.

MIA Vice President Election

The following candidates will be on the ballot for MIA Base Vice President:

  • Barbara Chiclana
  • Joseph Doane
  • Alba Toledo

IMPORTANT: Electronic Voting Information

The National Ballot Committee is pleased to be able to offer this special election via Electronic/Online Voting with our vendor YesElections. You will be able to easily and securely vote electronically with the same method we utilized for the Strike, Tentative Agreement, and Dues Restructure Voting via APFA.org.

Voting will open on APFA.org on July 21, 2025. Electronic votes must be received no later than August 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM (CT). The ballot count will take place at APFA Headquarters and results will be sent to the MIA based membership.

July Incentive Point / Critical Period
July 1 – July 7

During the July Critical Period, which is from July 1 to July 7, if you complete all operational assignments (sequences, airport standby assignments, Reserve Availability Periods (RAPs), and special assignments) without any absences or removals (such as Sick, FMLA, Jury Duty, Military, Personal, Bereavement, etc.), including pre-planned absences and removals, you will earn one (1) incentive point. These incentive points will help reduce future point-generating dependability events.

You may earn up to three (3) incentive points per year. Incentive points are unlimited and do not expire. Probationary Flight Attendants may accrue incentive points during their probationary period, but those points will only be applied to absences incurred after the probationary period.

If you receive a chargeable occurrence during the critical period, such as SK, TM, etc., you will be charged an additional point. No single occurrence will be charged more than three points.
