8.13.25 – Hot Cabin Report Form and National Academies Study on Aircraft Cabin Temperature

Hot Cabin Report Form and National Academies Study on Aircraft Cabin Temperature

Wednesday, August 13, 2025

As Flight Attendants, we are responsible for keeping our passengers—and ourselves—safe. During the summer, aircraft systems like the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) may be overworked, and as a result, inoperative throughout summer flying. Extreme heat in the cabin can lead to potentially unsafe and unhealthy environment for both Flight Attendants and passengers, so as we press the company and lawmakers to set industry-wide temperature standards, it is important that these events are reported:

  1. Hot Cabin Report (APFA)
  2. Cabin ASAP Report (FAA)
  3. CERS Report (AA)

When faced with a hot cabin scenario prior to boarding or an inoperative APU, please refer to Section 3.5.2, Guidelines for Boarding a Warm Aircraft, in the IFM. Any time these procedures are followed due to an increased cabin temperature or if the APU is inoperative, please document these events with both a Cabin ASAP report > Hot Cabin as well as a CERS report. The Hot Cabin Report form goes directly to APFA and supports our Union’s efforts to establish acceptable minimum and maximum temperatures.

If you believe to have experienced heat exhaustion from one of these events, please file an IOD. If your injury requires immediate medical attention, go to the nearest emergency room.

You can have this information sent directly to your cell phone by calling the APFA Notification System at 817-357-8786 and selecting prompt 6 for Extreme Cabin Temperature or Hot Cabin Event.

As required by the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Bill, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine is conducting a study on the impact of aircraft cabin temperatures on passenger and crewmember health and safety. APFA is participating on a panel and providing data that demonstrates how excessive heat in the cabin is dangerous for passengers and crewmembers. The Hot Cabin Reports that you submit to APFA will help support the National Academies aircraft cabin temperature study.
