10.08.23 – National Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month 2023

National Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month

Sunday, October 8, 2023

Throughout National Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month, we pause to recognize the contributions and presence of the Latinx and Hispanic American community nationally and within our Membership. Today, DFW-based Flight Attendant Michael Sosa shares his story.

DFW Flight Attendant Michael Sosa

“I was hired at American Airlines in 2015. Being a Flight Attendant has been the highlight of my life. It has also made my parents and family extremely proud of me.

Both of my parents were born in Mexico. My mom is from Tijuana and my dad was born on a rancho in Guerrero. Although my parents were born in different parts of the country, they have a similar story. They both lost their fathers at a young age and both crossed the border to pursue the American dream. Arriving in America as early teens, both my parents lived in Los Angeles, and experienced bullying in school due to not being able to speak English. My father expressed how hard of a time that was for him- he ended up dropping out of school and going to work. Eventually my parents met a few years later in church and were married.

Through hard work and determination, they became citizens and started to build their family and American dream. My father worked his way up to general manager for a large food manufacturing company, and my mom became a realtor.

My parents story is a vital part of who I am as a person today, growing up they made sure we understood and appreciated our Mexican culture.

When I put my wings on and work to Mexico or any Latin American country, I pride myself on being that resource for our non-English speaking passengers. I think of my parents at a young age in America not being able to communicate or receive help because of a language barrier. I speak Spanish with pride knowing I am making our passengers day easier.

Whenever I am approached at the airport and I hear “hablas español?”, the look of relief and the smile they get once I answer “si” warms my heart.

This job has been a blessing in my life. I get to travel the world and help mi gente along their journey.”

Thank you, Michael, for sharing your story with us!
