APFA Files for Federal Mediation
Today, APFA filed for federal mediation in our contract talks. As we previously discussed in this hotline, federal mediation is part of the process for reaching an agreement under the Railway Labor Act.
The National Mediation Board (NMB) is the government agency supervising negotiations in the airline and rail industries. By law, either party or both parties can file for mediation in their contract talks. The NMB will assign a mediator who will set the timing and location of the bargaining talks. The mediator has no ability, however, to compel either party to agree to contract terms.
APFA and the company will continue bargaining while a mediator is being assigned and scheduled. Although we have substantive disagreements on many important issues, we have had productive discussions at the bargaining table and have worked through many issues.
APFA will present our comprehensive economic proposal to the company on March 7th. This proposal, along with the remaining unresolved issues, will provide the basis for the remainder of the contract talks. To see the status of each contractual section, as well as the sections that remain open, please visit the APFA Negotiations Status page.
We will provide more information once the National Mediation Board assigns a mediator. For now, please keep up to date with negotiations by visiting the APFA website. Say tuned for more days of ACTION, and wear your Union pin every day, every trip.
