10.10.23 – PBS Holiday Bidding Reminders

PBS Holiday Bidding Reminders

Tuesday, October 10, 2023

Bidding for the 2023 Holidays is here! While getting ready to bid for November and December, we want to provide some helpful tips that are especially important for the holiday months. In this hotline, we will review the following topics:

Position Bidding

The “Prefer Positions Order” property allows you to prioritize positions. You may exclude a position you do not want to fly by bidding only desired positions. If you don’t enter a position order preference, the system will award in numerical order (01,02,03,04, etc.). Add a leading zero when bidding single-digit positions (e.g., 01, 02, 03). You will receive an error message of “not valid” if you do not use the correct format.

It is important to remember that you should never use the Prefer Positions Order preference twice in the same layer. It is okay to separate your position order preference in different layers or include all your desired positions in order in the same layer (as shown in the examples below).

The examples below are incorrect ways of bidding position order. There is no alert that lets you know you have used the “Prefer Positions Order” property twice in the same layer.

PBS will not read the below bid preference as 02,01,04. The system will have to choose between the two conflicting position order preferences, either positions 02,01 OR position 04.

Similarly, the below conflicting Prefer Positions Order bids in every layer may result in an unsatisfactory award.

How do I bid position order correctly?

In the example below, layers one and two contain a generic bid for HNL pairings. In layer one, the position order preference is for position 04 only. When processing the award, PBS would only award position 04, if available. PBS would then move on to layer two and award position 02, 01 or 03, if available.

Layer Tab and View Pairing Set

Always check the Layer Tab to ensure you have bids in every layer. Click on View Pairing Set to review the pairings that are included in each layer. By doing this, you can ensure your preferences are capturing the pairings you want to bid. If you notice trips in your pairing set that you didn’t intend to bid, consider adjusting properties and preferences to eliminate pairings you don’t want.

Additionally, make sure you are bidding pairings in each layer. If you are seeing zeroes in any layers, review the properties and preferences you are bidding. Make sure you are not bidding properties that conflict or that you are not repeating identical bids from previous layers.

Coverage Needed Days

As we have shared in recent hotlines, Coverage Needed (CN) is a term applied to a day in a bid month that occurs when not enough Flight Attendants bid in PBS to fly on that day. PBS will allow as many Flight Attendants as possible to be off on a particular day (whether it’s a holiday or not). The system will reach a point it has to start forcing coverage as it cannot finish the award process with the number of pairings that remain in open time.

Historically, there is an increase in CN days during holiday months. Many Flight Attendants are bidding around the holidays, and there is limited ability for everyone who requests a day off to hold it off.  It’s impossible to predict which days will be CN days.  Make sure you bid to cover the possibility of being forced to cover a day by expanding your parameters and choices to prevent being assigned a trip you didn’t bid to fly.

For Reserves it’s important to note that, in addition to seniority, legalities and patterns impact CN days.

Hotlines from last year provide information on CN dates for the 2022 holiday months:

Target Credit Range (TCR)

Recently, Lineholders at all bases have been held to a 70- or 78-hour minimum line requirement. In many cases, the requirement has started at the most senior Flight Attendant at the base.  While many Flight Attendants would like to fly lower time – especially during the holiday months – this may not be possible with the current staffing and flying hours.

We recommend including enough pairings in your pairings pools to accommodate a minimum line requirement. We also recommend taking the potential for minimum line requirements into account as you place your TCR bids.

If you feel you have been misawarded, you must first file an award challenge on the Support Tab on Crew Portal. We also encourage you to file a PBS Misaward Challenge Form on the APFA website so the APFA PBS Team can review your bid and award.
