Contract Implementation Update #20

“Stand Up” Deadhead
CBA 16.L

CBA Section 16.L will be implemented on April 1st, 2025, and is a new provision allowing the Company to reschedule a deadheading Flight Attendant (after sequence report and prior to release of the last working leg of the sequence) to work their scheduled deadhead, regardless of Reserve coverage or need to prevent a delay or cancellation.  (CBA 10.J). This is also referred to as being “stood-up” on a deadhead.

This reschedule is outside of the normal CBA 10.J rescheduling steps and is intended to help coverage (reduce reserve dependency), reduce the need to disrupt other crews, and reduce the need to create an open sequence with a deadhead to cover an open segment.

Standing-up a deadheading Flight Attendant will primarily be used when Crew Scheduling or Tracking is trying to cover a single flight.

Q & A

Q1: When can Scheduling or Tracking stand me up on my deadhead?

Section 16.L may only be utilized after a Flight Attendant has reported for their sequence. After sequence report, a Flight Attendant is subject to being rescheduled to work any deadheads on their sequence.

Q2: Can I be stood up to work my flight to/from training?

No. A Flight Attendant may not be rescheduled to work their flight to/from scheduled training.

Q3: There are three crews deadheading on a flight; how will Scheduling or Tracking determine who to stand-up?

Just as a normal Reschedule, this will be offered in seniority order and then assigned to the most junior of all legal Flight Attendants on the NS at the time the deadhead is being rescheduled. Scheduling/Tracking will try to keep Flight Attendants in their original bid position when Rescheduling.

Q4: What if I’m not in uniform?

Due to 16.L most likely being used in last minute situations, a Flight Attendant may not have time to change into uniform prior to boarding. A Flight Attendant would be able to board out of uniform providing they change into uniform as soon as possible. This may be after takeoff, depending on the timing.

Q5: I am taking an alternate deadhead to/from my commuter city. Can I be stood-up?

No, a Flight Attendant cannot be stood-up on an alternate deadhead booked under 16.G or 16.H of the CBA.

Q6: I am on my last trip of the month. Can I be stood-up on my first working leg?

Because a Flight Attendant can only be rescheduled on their last sequence of the month after origination, the Flight Attendant cannot be stood-up on the first flight of the sequence. The Flight Attendant would be eligible to be stood-up on any other flight in their sequence after origination.
