2025 First Quarter Financial Results Significantly Lag Our Competitors

Thursday, April 24, 2025

As evidenced by today’s dismal first quarter 2025 financial results, American Airlines lags significantly behind its competitors. This disparity raises concerns about our airline’s long-term competitiveness and the current management decision-making.

A contributor to this underperformance has been a series of missteps in sales and distribution strategies. Notably, the former Chief Commercial Officer at American Airlines—who was directly responsible for the recent high-profile sales and distribution blunder—continued receiving his base salary until January 31, 2025, totaling $462,019 from his exit date in June 2024. Additionally, a lump sum payment of $968,750 was paid after his severance period concluded (Source: 10-K for American Airlines Group filed 2/19/2025).

This kind of executive exit package, especially in the wake of such costly strategic errors for American, sends a troubling message to frontline workers and investors. While leadership decisions have led to real financial setbacks for our company, those responsible are walking away with generous compensation. The rest of us are asked to make up for management’s costly errors with less onboard staffing and an outdated product, affecting Flight Attendant workload and customer perception.

We know all too well that when a company struggles, the frontline workers and passengers end up paying the price—through increased workloads, an inadequate onboard product, and growing uncertainty. Given an unstable global economy and decreased passenger demand, results show that American Airlines has a long way to go to match our competitors.

It is time that American Airlines executives are held to the same performance standards as the Flight Attendants. American Flight Attendants are held to more than a dozen performance-based chargeable events daily. It is time that our executives are held to not only the same standard but a much higher one.

Today, we are calling on American Airlines’ leadership to right this ship—enough with the excuses. Fix the product in all cabins and staff your airplanes to be the global leader in aviation.

The path to once again becoming a world-class airline starts with prioritizing people and performance. Flight Attendants are ready to do our part—but we expect the same from those at the top.

On behalf of 28,000 American Airlines Flight Attendants,
