October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each year, we take this time to bring attention to an issue that affects millions and to remind you that help and hope are always available.

What is Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)?

According to the CDC, IPV includes abuse or aggression that occurs in a romantic relationship. This can happen between current or former spouses or dating partners, and it can take many forms:

• Physical violence – when a partner uses force to cause harm.
• Sexual violence – any unwanted sexual act or coercion.
• Stalking – repeated, unwanted contact that causes fear or concern for safety.
• Psychological aggression – verbal or non-verbal behavior meant to control, manipulate, or harm emotionally.

Why Is It Important?

• About 41% of women and 26% of men in the U.S. have experienced physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner.
• More than 61 million women and 53 million men have experienced psychological aggression.
• One in five homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner.

• Domestic violence isn’t always physical. It can also be emotional, financial, or social. In aviation, where we often spend time away from home and the people who know us best, isolation can make it harder to recognize or talk about what’s happening. If you’re concerned for yourself, a friend, or a loved one, please know you are not alone, help and support are available.
